Lina Toyoda
Registered Psychotherapist
Are you feeling overwhelmed by a difficult situation in your life? You don’t feel like your usual self or may be going through change or loss that has impacted you in unexpected ways. I’m a trauma specialist who focuses on depression, anxiety, grief, substance use and self-harm. I will help you to let go of limiting beliefs about yourself and change your negative thinking. Perhaps you want better coping skills for emotional regulation or to shift out of your perfectionist or people-pleasing behaviours and feel more confident in your decisions. You will begin to understand the relationship between your thoughts, emotions, and actions, and be supported to live life fully, aligned to your highest values. You may be searching for meaning and purpose in your life or wanting to feel more satisfied in your relationships.
I am committed to providing a safe and judgment-free space for you to explore your experiences. With a trauma-informed approach, you will be guided toward healing and greater self-awareness. I will support you through change and challenges to help you realize your greatest potential. I also offer EMDR, an evidence-based treatment to reduce symptoms of trauma and reactivity to traumatic memories.
My approach to therapy is collaborative, open-minded, empowering, and culturally sensitive. I will support you to better understand yourself and your patterns, how your past experiences inform your current situation, and the underlying issues that are impacting you today. It takes courage to take the first step and I welcome you to the therapeutic process.
Specializations:
I work with clients with a broad range of issues including depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, dissociation, emotional regulation, addiction and substance use, self-esteem/self-worth/self-concept, self-harm, grief and loss, racial trauma and experiences of marginalization, relationship issues, developmental trauma, insecure attachment, meaning and purpose, spiritual distress, transformative/transcendent experiences, psychosis, bipolar disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, life and career transitions, communication and conflict, acceptance and change.
My Approach:
I take an integrated approach to psychotherapeutic care and intuitively develop a plan that works collaboratively with each client. I believe that creating the right conditions for personal growth will facilitate positive changes in one’s life and relationships with self and others.
I draw upon principles of person-centred, existential, mindfulness and compassion-based (ACT), emotion-focused therapy (EFT), psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), parts theory (Jungian and IFS), and life stage theories. I also attend to the spiritual dimension of the human experience for those interested in exploring ways in which spirituality is connected to healing.
Creating an inclusive space is important to my practice, and I welcome clients from all walks of life and those who wish to process experiences of marginalization. I will help you gain clarity on your own thoughts, emotions and actions, help you develop healthier and more satisfying relationships, and work with you towards building a life aligned to your highest values.
