Jennifer Nelson, PhD
Registered Psychotherapist
I work with individual adult clients who are interested in exploring new ways to understand and meet the challenges in their lives.
My therapy approach is psychodynamic. Psychodynamic therapy works through in-depth discussion between therapist and client in a safe, supportive space. We focus on better understanding patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving, both conscious and unconscious. We consider early life experiences and how they shape our sense of self and ways of relating to others.
I see therapy as a mutual effort, between therapist and client, to better understand someone’s anxieties and struggles, and to support them in figuring out what they want. I don’t impose an agenda or goals; these are developed in cooperation with you over time as we better understand the roots of your concerns and what you wish to change in your life. The quality of the therapeutic alliance is key to this
effort.
I believe that we cannot understand our lives outside the context of our societies, cultures, and histories. My academic background in sociology and equity informs my understanding of how systems of
marginality and oppression shape individual struggles.
My clients bring a range of concerns, including but not limited to:
Interpersonal relationships
Family dynamics
Parenting
Sexual and gender identity
Childhood abuse and trauma
Loss and grief
Depression, sadness, anxiety
Racial and cultural identity
Experiences of discrimination and oppression
Intergenerational trauma
Self care and lifestyle concerns
Disordered eating
Feeling “stuck”
Work and career aspirations
Body image
Finding meaning in life
